Breath...

It occupies a special place in the world.

It is, at once, completely ordinary, and also, absolutely extraordinary.

There is not a single cell in your body that is not touched by the breath (including the breath you’re taking right now).

And, the only reason that process is possible is because of a particular set of evolutionary circumstances deep in the history of our planet. If not for those circumstances, we wouldn’t be having this conversation at all.

That means…

Your breath has the power to connect you with something as small as a cell and, simultaneously, something as big as the history of the universe.

I don’t know about you but I find that incredibly compelling!

So did the yogis of olden-day times, which is why pranayama is considered such an important pillar of practice. And yet, for some reason, it’s one that is completely underserved in modern-day yoga.

Shall we fix that?

Together

We’ll dive into the anatomy of breathing, its role in the regulation of your body, emotions and nervous system, and more specifically its role in the practice of yoga, including different techniques and what they each do.

You won’t just walk away with a  functional understanding of the breath…

You’ll walk away feeling absolutely inspired by it.

In addition to understanding the mechanics of breathing, you’ll appreciate its poetry too. And, more specifically, you’ll be able to keep a range of techniques in your back pocket so you can pull them out whenever you need, or want, to use them.

There are a lot of breath-work courses…
and workshops….
and teachers out there,
aren’t there?

There’s breath work for nervous system regulation, breath work for emotional healing, breath work for altered states of consciousness.

You might be thinking, ‘Does the world really need another breath-work offering?!’

My answer to that is, yes, because do you know what we don’t see much of?

Meaningful explorations of the role of breath in yoga (both of its functional power and its magic)..

For example….

If you’re a yoga teacher, how much did you learn about breathing (both the physiology of the breath and actual techniques) in your 200h teacher training?

If you’re a student, how often do you attend classes that actually teach pranayama?

why do you think that is?

It’s not because breath isn’t important; it is.

It actually does regulate your nervous system.

It actually does play a role in emotional healing.

It actually can alter your state of consciousness.

It has a huge role to play in a host of other processes that are integral, not just to your ability to survive, but also thrive.

It isn’t missing from yoga practice because it’s not important. I suspect the only reason it's missing is because we were focused on other things.

Over the last few decades, asana and later, meditation, swept through the yoga-sphere in big and exciting waves. While we were focused on them, breath fell by the wayside.

I think it’s time to remedy that, don’t you?!

In this masterclass we'll dive into:

  • Understanding the anatomy and physiology of the breath

  • It’s role in our experience of stress, relaxation and emotion

  • Developing a deeper appreciation of the ways breath connects us to something much bigger than our self.

  • Experiencing a range of techniques that tap you into different properties of, and outcomes of, the breath so you can apply them to your life and/or share them with others.

This breath masterclass is for you if:

  • You’re a yoga teacher who wants to use the breath, and more specifically, formal pranayama, in class but don’t yet feel confident teaching it.

  • You’ve read yogic texts and seen the big claims they make about breathing and thought, ‘That seems far-fetched. Is it actually true?’, and are looking for some clarification.

  • You’re someone who would like to incorporate breath-work into your daily routine but aren’t sure how (or why).

  • You’re a human who’s looking for simple strategies to help you regulate your emotions and nervous system in a busy and demanding world.

Perhaps the most important thing you’ll take from this, though, is the fact the breath - in every way - is inspiring.

In fact, the most exciting thing about preparing this experience for you has been how lit up I feel about my own life as a result!

Investigating how we work as an organism…

Investigating how (through the breath) we’re in conversation with the ecosystem around us…

Investigating all the ways we can use the breath as a lever to help modulate the experience of being ‘human’ in a busy and disconnected world, has infused me with a feeling of such joy and inspiration, I know it will for you too.

So, join me in this journey, and together we’ll uncover the magic, and the mechanics, of this very simple thing and its very extraordinary consequences.

Masterclass Access

You’ll have access to the masterclass from 9am on Saturday 16th March to 9am on Monday 18th March (NZDT).

Meet your teacher

Hey there,
I’m Karina Guthrie

I’m a yoga teacher and teacher trainer and, over the past 12 years, I’ve taught more than 1000 students how to teach yoga in more than fifty 200h and 300h yoga teacher training programs.

I’ve studied yoga in modern settings, and in traditional ones, as well as at university and, after all of that, I’m as passionate about it as ever.

What I’ve come to understand is that, although yoga can feel incredibly complicated with all its guidelines, techniques and philosophies, at its heart it’s really very simple.

It’s a daily invitation to embrace yourself exactly as you are, to be fully awake to each passing moment, and to open to the extraordinary gift of existence (not just in peak moments but in ordinary ones too).

Can yoga be a pathway to enlightenment? Yes. But it can also simply be the thing that helps you ‘human’ well, which is why it’s such a pleasure for me to share yoga in a way that sparks joy and grows awareness.

I lead in-person and online yoga classes, run 200h and 300h yoga teacher training programs, online courses and continuing education programs and I mentor teachers.

And really happy to be able to connect with you here too.
